Snow, 레드 핫 칠리 페퍼스(Red Hot Chili Peppers)가 말하는 <데스노트>의 철학

Prologue

불타는 금요일입니다.

늦은 시간에, 선배가 전화가 와서 안부를 물었습니다.

거의 일 년 만의 통화였습니다.

 

지금 대전으로 발령 나셔서, 가족과 떨어져 지내신다고 합니다.

주말인데 올라오시지도 못하고,

혼자서 쓸쓸히 소주 한잔 하시다가 문득 생각이 나셨다고 하네요!

 

"형님, 죄송해서 전화를 못 드렸어요!"

저를 위해 많은 신경을 써주셨는데,

제가 기대에 미치지 못해 죄송스러운 맘이 가득합니다.

 

50대가 넘어가면서,

스스로 인간관계에 대한 많은 생각을 하게 됩니다.

 

결국, 내가 서있는 곳이 어떤 곳이냐가

주위 관계에 대한 깊이를 결정하고 있는 것이 아닌지?

잘 못된 생각이지만, 이런 이기적인 생각과 변명을 하게 됩니다.

 

을씨년스러운 달을 보며, 주위 관계를 생각하며,

레드 핫 칠리 페퍼스(Red Hot Chili Peppers)의 'Snow' 곡을 들어봅니다.

레드 핫 칠리 페퍼스 (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

1983년 캘리포니아에서 처음 결성하여, 1984년 셀프 타이틀 앨범 [The Red Hot Chili Peppers]로 데뷔하였습니다.

1991년 [Blood Sugar Sex Magik] 앨범으로 funk rock 분야의 정점에 올라섭니다.

외설적이고 그루브 한 사운드의 이 앨범은 레드핫 최고의 명반 중 하나이자 90년대 명반 중 하나로 손꼽힙니다.

 

이후 밴드 간의 불화 등으로 방황하다가,

다시 재결성된 멤버로 1999년을 강타한 앨범인 [Californication]을 발매하게 됩니다.

전작의 그루브 한 면은 줄었지만, 이 앨범이 크게 히트하면서 다시 정상으로 올라갑니다.

 

Funk rock 스타일의 밴드답게 많은 사고도 칩니다.

 

1994년 우드스탁 공연에서 대형 전구를 머리에 뒤집어써 공연한 것과

우드스탁 1999 공연에서 '플리'가 몇만 명이나 되는 관중 앞에서 맨 몸에 베이스 하나 걸치고 연주한 것과,

벌거벗고 거기다 양말만 끼우고 공연하는 등 유명한 사고들을 많이 쳤습니다.

 

2000년대에  [By the Way]와 [Stadium Arcadium]이 흥행, 최고의 시기를 맞이 했습니다.

특히, [Stadium Arcadium] 앨범은 2006년 그래미 어워드에서 5개의 상을 수상하게 되었으며,

2012년 로큰롤 명예의 전당에 입성부터 현재까지 꾸준한 활동을 이어오고 있습니다.

 

마약, 탈퇴, 재입단, 민망한 퍼포먼스 등

정신없는 밴드지만, 철학이 있는 밴드였던 거 같고,

그래서 지금도 가끔씩은 찾아 듣는 거 같습니다.

'Snow'는  레드 핫 칠리 페퍼스 (Red Hot Chili Peppers)의

9번째 [Stadium Arcadium] (2006) 앨범에 수록된 곡으로, 'Dani California'란 곡과 함께 

일본 영화 <데스노트> 시리즈의 OST로 차례로 수록되기도 했습니다.

두곡 다 밴드의 Funk한 스타일과는 다르게 가사 내용이 매우 철학적이라는 것과

영화 <데스노트> 의 세계관과 잘 맞아 떨어지는 곡입니다.

제가 해석과 의역을 해보면,

눈 밭 한가운데,

발자국조차남아 있지 않은 곳에 혼자 서 있는

방황하는 자신의 자아와

 

무엇을 결정하건 신념에 따라 도전하고

내가 그런 도전을 해서 성공할 수 있도록 주위 사람들의 응원을 바라는 곡입니다.

 

겨울의 하얗고 투명한 Snow는 아니지만,

무언가 막막한 머릿속의

발자국 하나 없는 새 하얀 눈 밭을 생각하면 될 거 같습니다. 

하지만, 신나는 록의 리듬과 헤드뱅잉은 기본입니다.

 

Essay

Solo로 한강철교를 건너면서,

"아직도 도전하고 있다!"는 말을 하고 있는 거니?

"아직도 막막하다!"는 말을 하는 거니?

 

그렇다면, 

나를 진심으로 아껴주는 사람이라 생각되는 이들에게

기대어 보고, 응원을 바래보면 어떨까?
