봄비가 한번 더 올 듯 날씨가 꾸질꾸질하지만, 내일 밸런타인데이 기다리는 마음으로 상큼한 곡을 찾아봤습니다.

 

앞서 소개해드렸었던 그룹 맨해튼 트랜스퍼(the Manhattan Transfer)의 'Blue Champagne'입니다.

1969년 뉴욕에서 진 피스틸리(Gene Pistilli), 팀 하우저(Tim Hauser), 에린 디킨즈(Erin Dickins), 마티 넬슨(Marty Nelson), 팻 로살리아(Pat Rosalia)로 최초 결성되었습니다.

하지만, 1972년 팀 하우저(Tim Hauser) 주축으로 렐 마세(Laurel Masse), 재니스 시겔(Janis Siegel), 알란 폴(Alan Paul) 재 구성된 현재의 혼성 4인조 아카펠라 그룹 맨해튼 트랜스퍼(Manhattan Transfer)를 구축합니다.

 

1975년 사실상의 데뷔 앨범 [The Manhattan Transfer] 발표, 'Java Jive'가 수록된 [Operator]를 발표 흥행에 성공합니다.

화려한 혼성 화음이 돋보이는 코러스와 맨해튼에서 풍겨 나오는 도시적 세련미와 깔끔한 음악을 선보였으며, 빌보드 핫 100 7위까지 오른 'The Boy From New York City'를 비롯해 'Twilight Zone', 'Java Jive' 등의 히트곡은 국내 CF 삽입곡 등으로 자주 선보였습니다.

2009년 개봉 영화 <왓치맨>에서는 순간 이동능력이 있는 닥터 맨해튼의 별명으로 '맨해튼 트랜스퍼'라고 부르는 농담이 나오기도 합니다.
